Ever wonder why the term 'Extraordinary' Communion Minister?

This morning I braved the chill 5am air to make my way to Holy Mass where I was to serve my congregation for the first time as Extraordinary Communion Minister.

Such beauty is to be found today on this memorial of the birth of God's Holy catholic church. The sun casts it's first rays of light through the stained glass above the entrance way, over the head of the presider and the excited faces of the children waiting to process into the church building. They are eager to complete their current spiritual journey; having studied and prayed in preparation to partake in Holy Eucharist and to come into full communion with Our Lord. I am moved and filled with a sense of pure joy.

Holy Mass... our greatest and most powerful prayer.... is 'extraordinary'. This greatest of gifts from the Holy Spirit to Mother Church is truly extraordinary.

Today, on the memorial of the physical embodiment of God's Gift, the Holy Spirit, in the Church, I had the extraordinary experience of serving my brothers and sisters as an Extraordinary Communion Minister. I was quite unprepared for the extraordinary feeling I would gain through this ministry. A serenity and fullness of Christ's being embodied and emboldened me as I pronounced and looked deeply into each communicant's eyes; "The Body of Christ."

Thank God for this gift of Holy Spirit on this most extraordinary day.

The first shall be last...

Dear Theophilus,

This Sunday, May 27 2012 is Pentecost Sunday. And what a fitting if slightly daunting day for me to commence my role as Extraordinary Communion Minister in my Parish?
I had the very great privilege, honour and blessing to be born into a Roman Catholic family. Further to this, despite years of being tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the
wickedness of men, by cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive
(Ephesians 4:14), I have always heard and heeded the call from Our Lord, to return to His One holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
In writing here, I do not profess to be anything more than a lay person who desires to know and love the fullness of God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
I feel a compulsion to share my experiences as I have travelled a faith journey which, while always ending in the same earthly space of Our Lord's Holy Church, the person returning is a greater lover of God and a better man.
Primarily, I am writing this for myself... and perhaps my family, which does not share quite the same ecstatic joy I feel to be a part of the Body of Christ on earth. Especially my son, who at 17... is... well... 17!
Theophilus, if you are out there and wish to share in my journey, please contribute to my thoughts and growth as a child of God. If you find value in my thoughts, references, journey; take it in the spirit with which it is given... that Spirit of Love which comes from and is a part of the One True God, Yahweh.
